We got our copy from OUP – Lightning Strike but you can also get it from Amazon Lightning Strike (Super-readable Rollercoasters)Īdmin Bit – We were sent a few of the Super-Readable Rollercoaster books to read. I highly recommend this for anyone learning about the Victorian period. I really do think this an incredible book because it brought this whole period and the struggles of the factory workers to life. So that is why I would say for 10+ because it does deal with this very real side of Victorian life but a side that I think younger kids may struggle with. Also it deals with things like a a young girl going bald, having all her teeth pulled out (something which mine found emotional), workers dying of Phossy Jaw, the potential of starving. Why would I recommend 10+ and not younger? There are a few things in there that I think younger kids may not fully understand, they talk about the main character (Eliza’s) father who has mistresses, they also talk about the dockworkers drinking a lot and coming home and hitting the wives. Also they have included suggested answers for the different activities at the end of the pack. And the resources are varied, which we like. The lessons are written for teacher’s but home educators can easily use them as well. For each lesson there is a one page lesson guide which breaks down what that lesson is covering suggested activities and points you to included resources. There is a overview of the scheme of work – it is broken down into 10 possible lesson. We used the pack and I found it really useful (when I use these packs I never do every activity mentioned, I read the ideas included and pull out the ones we want to use). I really do think it is one of the best resources you could use with your kids if you are looking at this time period.Īnd because the story is part of the new Super-Readable Rollercoaster series there is a Free to download teacher’s pack which goes with it. There really are too many things in this book to mention, but by just reading the story, getting involved in Eliza’s life both of my kids have absorbed these facts and now really do have a grip on this whole side of Victorian life. It makes it all so real for the kids that they are not going to forget, the beetles scurrying around the houses, eating your food with phosphorus on it, how the staff where fined for ridiculous reasons, how the two older girls in the family had to work so that there family were able to pay the rent and yet they still sometimes went hungry. The story itself would stand on its own just because of the structure and the characters but what really kicks it up into one of our “ not going to be forgotten” stories is how it paints a realistic scene of Victorian life. It is a well-written story with a strong female lead (Eliza, the character develops beautifully in the story), some emotional moments and you end up routing for the match girls. Through a chance meeting with a woman who wants to write about their living conditions, Eliza and her sister end up in a tough situation and she walks out of her job which results in everyone leaving the factory and the start of a strike. She is angry about her life, about how they are treated and how they can never improve anything. Lightning Strike centers around a young girl, Eliza, who lives with her family and works in the local match factory. It is a fictional story but it is based on the living conditions of many factory workers and it gives insights into why there were strikes and protests. If you have a kiddo in the 10+ age range that is learning about the Industrial Revolution / factory life in Victorian England then this is a story for them to read. And I can honestly say that this story is going to stay with both of my kids for a long time. We read a lot, but this book is one of those that has blown us away. ![]() ![]() ![]() The next step was the Apollo 9 mission, the first to carry a lunar module into orbit. In the 1990s, Chevron USA sold a neighboring parcel - the onetime Jones Ranch, which became the Andy Jauregui Ranch - to Disney, which used it to expand Golden Oak. The temporary Western street was removed in 2008 to make way for an urban business district set. In the late 1970s, after an absence of four decades, a Western town was reborn at the ranch for "Roots II," and it remained a prominent feature along with a covered bridge over a man-made lake often seen in "Little House on the Prairie" a colonial set used in "North and South" farm houses, barns, fields, country roads, tree groves and a running waterfall. In the early 1970s the new Antelope Valley Freeway (SR 14) threatened to run right through the property but Disney had a bit of pull with state officials, convincing them to wrap the freeway behind a nearby mountain, shielding the ranch from the noise and visibility. Disney liked the varied topography so much that he purchased 315 acres for $300,000 in 1959, increasing his holdings to more than 700 acres in the next few years.Įven while Disney was using it for filming, the Golden Oak doubled as a working cattle ranch for a time. Meanwhile, Carr's one-time movie property reverted to a working horse and cattle ranch that was occasionally used by filmmakers - including Walt Disney, who leased the property for portions of three years in the mid-1950s for the "Spin and Marty" segments of "The Mickey Mouse Club" television show. But Carr soon ran out of money and had to sell the ranch Hickson picked up his sticks around 1930 and moved them westerly in Placerita Canyon, erecting what would become the Monogram and later Melody Ranch. "Ernie" Hickson, collected old Western buildings that he imported from Nevada (some say he acquired special lumber in Nevada and assembled the buildings on site), and used them to create a Western movie town for Carr's productions. Pioneer filmmaker Trem Carr owned what he called the Placeritos Ranch at the same site as early as 1922. Disney purchased the ranch in 1959, but the area's history as a filming backdrop actually begins much earlier. We spent a few days on the island just cruising around on our scooter, following the random signs pointing to mysterious sights like ‘viewpoint’ or ‘hidden beach’. Koh Yao Yai was a little bit bigger than expected, with a population of about 8,000, but even in the main village on the island it never felt like it was busy. Scooter rentals are between THB250 and THB300 (US$7.70 – $9.20) for 24 hours, and after getting back in the saddle it didn’t take me long to feel confident enough not only to cruise down the main road – where luckily, there was barely any traffic – but also a few of the smaller dirt roads which led to some hidden beaches. After walking along the road for a bit on our first day to see if we could get anywhere on foot (nope!), I realized I had no choice but to get over my fear of scooters if I wanted to see something of the island other than our hotel. You could get by with the private songthaws (your hotel will call them for you), but honestly, this is a pretty limited way to get around, since they transport you from A to B rather than showing you the island. Since most resorts seem to be like this – small bungalow villages along the coast, with not much surrounding them – if you want to see the island, you have no choice but to rent a scooter. Our small resort right by the beach was lovely, but there wasn’t anything to do there except for taking walks along the beach, taking a kayak out for a ride around the bay, or lounging by the pool. Our hotel was on the western coast of the island, meaning we didn’t get to see any of the glorious Thai sunsets, which was a bit of a shame. Occasionally, you pass a small village, but mostly there are just clusters of simple houses and maybe a simple village shop or two. No matter where you drive, you’re almost always surrounded by lush jungle scenery. There is only one main road that circles nearly the entire island, and a few additional small side roads. Koh Yao Yai was the first island we visited, and on the ride in the Songthaw (shared pickup truck) from the ferry pier to our hotel, the lush green jungles bordering the road reminded me of Koh Chang.
